Backup Power Generator FAQs
We know that our home of Florida, ironically nicknamed the Sunshine State, gets its fair share of power outages each year thanks to hurricane season and thunderstorm coastal weather.
Although power outages are frequent, that does not make them any less inconvenient as our lives are essentially on pause when power is lost. You’re probably asking yourself, “How long is this going to last? Is my food in the refrigerator going to spoil? How do I charge my phone in case of an emergency?”
By installing a backup power generator on their property, many homeowners are able to eliminate this worry. When a power loss occurs, a backup generator provides a residence or business with rapid, continuous electricity.
We’ve compiled this list of frequently asked questions below to assist if you’re considering installing a generator in your house.
What is a GenerX installed automatic standby generator?
A GenerX installed automatic standby generator provides a complete (or partial – your choice) backup electrical system that operates whether you are home or away. By continuously monitoring your electrical utility feed, the generator automatically starts and then supplies power to your entire home or business – all within seconds of detecting an outage!
Once the storm is passed and the utility power is restored, the generator shuts itself off and waits for the next outage. Home standby generators operate on CLEAN and economical natural gas or liquid propane gas. Commercial & Industrial customers have the option of Generac generators powered by diesel, natural gas, or bi-fuel /dual fuel (diesel and natural gas) engines.
Why should I buy an automatic standby generator instead of a portable generator?
Consider this scenario. You buy a portable generator and a few weeks later, the lights go out. If you want to restore your power you’ll need to head out to the garage, start the generator, then run extension cords through your house to the appliances you want to use. Even after all that is done, you still won’t have air conditioning.
If you had a permanent standby generator, it would kick on automatically within seconds of a power outage. These generators run on your home’s natural gas or LP fuel supply. They are less expensive to operate than gasoline and do not need to be refilled. Whether you’re home or away, standby generators provide protection 24/7. The generator will turn itself off when utility power returns.
Plus, when properly installed outside your home a standby generator presents less risk from carbon monoxide poisoning than running a portable generator in your garage.
Do I need to “turn on” a backup power generator when the power goes out?
This is the best part…you don’t! Your Generac generator will power up as soon as your home loses power. The generator is connected to your home’s electrical circuit breaker, which tells the generator when there has been an outage, prompting it to turn on within 30 seconds. Then, once power has been restored, the generator will automatically turn off.
Do they have to be maintained?
Yes, simple maintenance is required. All generators require periodic oil and filter changes to ensure maximum performance for years of reliable service. Preventative maintenance kits are available and many Generac dealers offer annual maintenance contracts for a worry-free ownership experience. Refer to the owner’s manual for routine maintenance procedures and schedules.
