An “Above Average” Hurricane Season Predicted for 2022

After two consecutive years of higher-than-average named storms, indicators are yet again pointing to a higher-than-average hurricane season for 2022. According to an early forecast from the Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Meteorology Project, seasons with above-average activity have 13-16 named storms, 6-8 hurricanes, and 2-3 major hurricanes.

The two largest contributors to the upcoming intense hurricane season are: (1) Rising water temperatures in the Atlantic and (2) El Nino will not occur this year. CSU research has indicated that when the water in the Pacific is heated up by El Nino, fewer hurricanes form in the Atlantic. Additionally, increased vertical wind shear created by El Nino can further reduce hurricane activity in the Atlantic, whereas La Nina has the opposite effect.

This 2022 prediction follows the third largest hurricane season on record in terms of named storms.
