Why Ocala Homeowners Act

Ocala's Power Outage Reality

Ocala sits in the middle of the state, a long drive from either coast, and Hurricane Milton still took the power from 36,302 of Duke Energy's 78,907 Marion County customers in October 2024. Distance from the beach does not keep a Marion County home on the grid when a hurricane crosses the peninsula. At Hurricane Irma's peak in September 2017, 143,485 accounts across Marion County were without power, 76% of the county.

Four utilities carry the outages here. During Milton the city’s own Ocala Electric Utility had 11,932 of its 56,000 customers out, and Sumter Electric Cooperative 21,072 of its Marion County members. Two weeks earlier, Hurricane Helene had cut power to 26,056 Duke Energy customers in the county and to 8,988 on the city system.

Clay Electric Cooperative’s Marion County members fared worst in Helene: 9,019 of 16,869 lost power, more than half. A standby generator starts on its own within seconds of an outage and runs until utility power returns, whether that takes hours or days.

Why Ocala Chooses GenerX

What Makes Us Different

Ocala homeowners can pick from several generator companies. Here is what sets GenerX apart, and why it counts when a hurricane reaches Marion County and every installer in the area is booked at once.

No Subcontractors

No outside electrician or gas fitter works on an Ocala installation. The licensed electricians, gas specialists and installers are all GenerX employees, so one company answers for the job from the concrete pad to the transfer switch, with no outside markup added to your price.

Unique in the Ocala Market

12-Year Warranty

Generac air-cooled installations in Ocala come with the 12-year Power Plus Warranty, exclusive to Canter Power Systems brands. Behind it stand more than 25,000 Florida installs, parts warehoused across the state and the largest service technician fleet in Florida.

12 Years of Full Coverage

Florida's Largest Dealer

GenerX is Florida's largest authorized Generac and Kohler dealer, with more than 25,000 installs across the state since 2005. That experience covers city and county permit offices, gas and propane hookups, and the four electric utilities that serve Marion County.

25,000+ FL & TN Installs

Storm-Ready Service Fleet

When Duke Energy, Ocala Electric Utility and Sumter Electric all have customers out in the same storm, a one-location dealer cannot answer every call. GenerX keeps parts on warehouse shelves across Florida and moves crews in from its other locations when one region is hit.

Warehouses in FL & TN

Quality + Value

Our own employees do the labor, so an Ocala quote carries no subcontractor margin. Buying as Florida's largest dealer gets us better equipment pricing than a small shop can get, so a better installation does not have to cost more.

No Hidden Third-Party Costs

Generator Specialists

Standby generators are the whole business at GenerX. Every technician, warehouse and process is set up to install and service them, rather than to fit generators in between general electrical calls.

How It Works in Ocala

Your Installation Process

    Preparing for Installation

GenerX pulls the permits with a licensed electrician and schedules the inspections. You provide a signed Notice of Commencement and a readable property survey.

  3. 03

    Testing and Training

We test the whole system, automatic transfer and load included, then show you how it runs, set up remote monitoring, and answer your questions before we leave.

Ocala Pricing Guide

What Does a Generator Cost in Ocala?

Whole home generator installation in Ocala typically runs $7,000 to $25,000+. Size, fuel source, and what your lot looks like all move the number.

11 to 14 kW
Essential Circuits

Essential circuits (lights, fridge, AC unit)

Smaller homes and condos · One AC zone
$7,000 to $10,000
Installed
24 to 26 kW
Larger Homes

Larger homes, multiple HVAC zones

3,000 to 4,500 sq ft · Two AC units
$13,000 to $17,000
Installed
36 kW+
Heavy Load Homes

Large homes, home offices, medical equipment

4,500+ sq ft · Three or more AC zones
$17,000 to $25,000+
Installed

Pricing includes equipment, in house installation, transfer switch, permit fees, and our 12-year warranty on every Generac air-cooled unit we install. Where a Peoples Gas main reaches your street, a natural gas hookup typically costs less to set up than a propane tank install. These prices assume an existing fuel source on the property.

Because GenerX employs all labor directly, we eliminate the outside contractor markup that drives installation costs higher at other companies. Our buying volume as Florida’s largest dealer means better equipment pricing than smaller dealers can match. The result is a higher quality installation at a better price.

Choosing Your Generator

Generac vs. Kohler: Which Is Right for Your Ocala Home?

GenerX installs and services both Generac and Kohler whole home generators in Ocala. Here is how the two brands compare for Marion County homes.

Generac whole home standby generator

Generac

Generac is the most widely installed home standby brand in the United States. Its residential range runs from 11 kW air cooled units to 24 kW and beyond, Mobile Link handles remote monitoring, and the large Florida dealer network keeps parts close, which is why most Ocala buyers choose it.

Kohler whole home standby generator

Kohler

Kohler is known for quiet running and a premium build, with engineering drawn from its commercial generators. Owners who rank sound first, or who live under association rules about exterior equipment, often pick Kohler.

At the free estimate we compare both brands against your house, your lot and any association rules. We sell and service both, so we have no reason to push one over the other. The goal is the right fit.

Ocala Homeowner Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions Ocala homeowners ask us most often before scheduling an estimate.

How much does whole home generator installation cost in Ocala, FL?

Whole home generator installation in Ocala typically runs $7,000 to $25,000+, depending on generator size (11kW to 36kW+), fuel and the site. The Peoples Gas tariff lists Ocala, Belleview, Dunnellon and unincorporated Marion County, and Peoples Gas runs a local operations center in Ocala; homes beyond its mains run on propane. GenerX gives free in-home estimates with an exact price, and since our electricians and gas fitters are our own employees, no subcontractor markup is built in.

Do I need a permit to install a generator in Ocala?

Yes. A standby generator needs permits for the electrical work, the gas line and the pad, and the office that issues them depends on your address:

  • City of Ocala: the Growth Management building staff, through the Customer Service Center on the second floor of 201 SE 3rd Street or the eTrakit portal
  • Unincorporated addresses with an Ocala mailing address: Marion County Building Safety

GenerX pulls the permits with a licensed electrician and schedules the inspections.

Does GenerX have an office in Ocala?

No. Our nearest location to Ocala is the Flagler facility at 203 W Booe St in Bunnell, about 71 miles by road from the center of the city. Estimates, installations, maintenance and 24/7 repair calls for Marion County go out from there, and after a large outage GenerX brings in technicians from its other Florida locations.

How long does generator installation take in Ocala?

Most Ocala installations are finished within 30 to 90 days of the order. That window covers permit approval from the City of Ocala or Marion County, equipment delivery, site preparation and the installation day. Association review of exterior equipment, where your community requires it, can add time before work begins.

Which utility serves my Ocala area home?

Four utilities report Marion County customers to the Florida PSC: Ocala Electric Utility, the city’s own system covering about 160 square miles; Duke Energy; Sumter Electric Cooperative; and Clay Electric Cooperative. Which one you have depends on the street, and your electric bill names it. A GenerX transfer switch works with all four.

What size generator do I need for my Ocala home?

For most Ocala homes a 22kW generator runs the whole house with the air conditioning on, which is the load that counts in a Florida summer outage. Smaller 11 to 14kW units cover essential circuits. Larger 26 to 36kW units suit homes over 4,000 sq ft, houses with two or more air conditioning systems, and properties with pools, workshops or medical equipment. GenerX sizes the unit with a free load assessment.

Does GenerX use subcontractors for Ocala generator installations?

No. Our licensed electricians, gas line specialists and installation technicians are GenerX employees, and we do not subcontract any part of an Ocala installation. You deal with one company, the work is checked to one standard, and your price carries no third-party labor markup.

What warranty does GenerX offer on Ocala generator installations?

Every Generac air-cooled installation carries the 12-year Power Plus Warranty, exclusive to Canter Power Systems brands, covering parts and labor at no extra cost. More than 25,000 GenerX installations across Florida, a statewide network of parts warehouses and the largest service technician fleet in the state stand behind it.

Should my Ocala generator run on natural gas or propane?

GenerX installs both. Where a Peoples Gas main reaches your street in Ocala, Belleview, Dunnellon or unincorporated Marion County, the generator connects to the utility line and runs as long as the gas flows. Lots beyond the mains run on a propane tank on the property. At the free estimate we confirm what reaches your address and go through both setups.
